Spanish press reports Armenia ready to place part of territory under US control
The report cites a memorandum, supposedly shared by anonymous members of the Armenian diaspora in France, which outlines the creation of a 42-kilometer (27-mile) corridor through southern Armenia. This corridor would link Azerbaijan with its exclave of Nakhchivan and would reportedly be administered by a U.S. company, with security provided by approximately 1,000 armed private contractors. These forces would have permission to use lethal force to maintain control of the corridor. The proposed agreement would last for 99 years and has allegedly been approved by the governments of the U.S., Armenia, and Azerbaijan.
Periodista Digital criticized the reported deal as a disastrous move for Armenia, arguing that it would serve American interests and those of regional powers Azerbaijan and Türkiye, while damaging Armenia’s relationship with France.
However, the Armenian government dismissed the article, calling it "manipulative propaganda" and part of a hybrid warfare campaign. Officials also questioned the credibility of Periodista Digital, labeling it an unreliable source. No official comments have been made by the U.S. or Azerbaijan.
The report comes amid ongoing negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan aimed at resolving their longstanding conflict. While Baku has insisted on a transport corridor to Nakhchivan, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has recently rejected this demand, stressing the need for mutual respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty in any final agreement.
